Re-filming and Issues

The original sketched shot of Katie
Today I re-filmed the three shots that were required. This included the two mysteriously missing shots (the sketch of Katie washing up and the shot of Ed throwing the plate into the sink, hurting Katie), as well as the sketched shot of Katie sitting on the sofa, which really didn't have much of a resemblance to her. Everything went okay, and I feel that these re-filmed shots are sufficient.

The other idea which I was planning to pursue was to change the order of my scenes. My teacher suggested that the first scene, in the park, didn't quite give the impression that the boy was trying to tell the girl that he loved her, but couldn't. It was suggested that the second scene, where the boy actually spells out the words, gave a better indication, and that it may be better for this scene to come first so that the audience are aware of the purpose of the film throughout the rest. However, when it came to working this all out, I realised it wouldn't be as simple as it sounded to change. Had the sketch aspect not existed, I could simply select shots I wanted and drag them in front of the original first scene on Final Cut. As I have the sketched shots I realised this couldn't work. The end of the first scene ends with a sketch, and the beginning of the second scene begins with one. These are both shown in the same shot, by the first sketch being seen, and put on a pile of paper in front in order to reveal the sketch for the start of the second scene. This links the two scenes together, and if they were moved around then it simply wouldn't work (this is also the same for the second and third, and third and forth sketched links). I had two options, which I really couldn't pursue:

  1. Cut all the sketched shots up so that they were not linked to any other sketches, this way I could stick them all back together but in the new order: This could look very messy, and the shots could end up looking jumpy and unprofessional - it is difficult to make multiple shots look like one longer durated one.
  2. Re-film all the sketches again. I really don't have enough time to do this. I have already had to ask Rhys to re-draw a couple of sketches, and to do it all again would be a lot to ask and very time consuming, as it took many hours to achieve it in the first place.
Many attempts of re-filming one shot,
this would not be fun for all of them!
The latter point is something I spent time thinking about: if the time it would take would be worth it for the finished product. I decided that it would take such a long time, and be a lot to ask for one minor change, the swapping of the scenes, which was only recommended by one viewer out of many. Although I can understand how the first shot may not show that he is trying to say I Love You, everything is still clearly going wrong during the film:
  1. Katie being bored at the picnic/Frisbee game
  2. Ed spilling food over Katie
  3. Ed dropping a plate and hurting Katie's hand
The latter all still suits and responds to the title "A Sketchy Kind of Love", and still makes sense, even if the story is conveyed differently to his attempt to say I Love You, the fact that he is attempting and failing at impressing her works on a similar prospect. I am hoping that my film will still turn out to be successfully understood without switching scene orders.
