Sound

There are many different options when it comes to sound. Here are my reasons for choosing, or not choosing, to have particular types of sound in my short film:

Dialogue: I have decided to not have any dialogue featured in my film, simply based on the fact that I am trying to be creative, and trying to put across my ideas to the audience in other ways. For example, the boy writes the words "I love you", in order for the audience to understand the context of the awkward moments between the boy and girl. I also feel dialogue is difficult to record - using recordings taken from the filming can often sound of poor quality, so many will choose to re-record their dialogue through a microphone on the computer - but it can be difficult to time the dialogue with the characters lips moving. I simply feel that dialogue is difficult, and is not necessary in a short film.

Voice over: Again, I feel as though a voice over is not needed, and that the characters actions and the "sketching" aspect is enough to explain to the audience what is going on.

Underscore: I will not have an underscore based on the fact there is no dialogue - instead, I will have a full score of music playing.

Score: This is basically my sound. I will look at soft piano music (chosen by my target audince), to be played throughout. This is so a mood can be established amoungst the characters and so the story can be better understood.

The only time the musical score will stop is when the situation becomes awkward (in each scene). This is the part when the boy has the opportunity to say "I love you". By stopping the music, it brings the moment to a climax, and clearly separates the moment out as significant. There will be ambient sound playing (ie. the diegetic background noise), although the characters will remain silent. I will achieve this ambient sound through keeping the sound on with the visuals, but simply turning it up when the music stops. During the last scene, when the boy finally says "I love you", he will mime it. At this point the music will not stop, it will simply climax (I am hoping to find a piece of piano music that will climax at the correct time - become faster).
